Launch of .eu internationalised domain names (IDNs)

From 10 December 2009, companies and private persons based in the European Union will be able to register .eu Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs).
IDNs are domain names that contain non-ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) characters. Computers only recognize numbers, so the ASCII code was developed as a sequential formula for representing characters as numbers. This is the most common code for text on computers. In common usage, ASCII means a text file that doesn’t include any formatting (plain text).

Non-ASCII (pronounced As-key) characters include, for example, the Swedish å, the German ü, and characters from the Bulgarian and Greek alphabets. Not all characters are supported by IDNs, however. For example, the German ß is not allowed.

IDNs are particularly important for .eu as the European Union has 27 Member States and 23 official languages. Many of these languages have non-ASCII characters in their alphabets.

In the matter of Lombaard vs Droprop CC and Others, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) was called on to adjudicate on the validity of an agreement of sale concluded when an option was exercised.

Briefly, the purchaser applied for an order compelling the sellers to transfer certain immovable property to him. The purchaser alleged that an agreement of sale had come into being pursuant to the exercise of an option to purchase, contained in an agreement of lease between him (as the lessee) and the seller (as the lessor). 		  Related People Steven Yeates
