African countries begin to see value of IP protection

A recent article in Polity.org.za notes that intellectual property protection is becoming more important for investment and trade in emerging economies.

The article quotes Adams & Adams consultant attorney Nicky Garnett extensively. “Using intellectual property as a strategy for economic growth has paid off for a number of countries in Africa,” she says.

More and more countries are realising that protecting IP attracts investment. Among them, South Africa has the advantage of a well-developed research and development base.

The article outlines some recent legislation and agreements in Africa and the organisations involved in protecting IP.
