Sophia Strydom, a graphic designer at Joe Public and Kenneth van Reenen, a copywriter at DDB South Africa are the winners of this year’s South African ‘Young Creatives' category in the Loerie Awards. Elected by a jury of international judges, the winners walked away with the industry’s most coveted award.
Both Kenneth and Sophia at the tender age of 24, are no newcomers to winning awards, having already won 30 and 24 awards respectively for their creative works in their short careers.
Sophia holds a BA Graphic Design with Corporate Communication Management degree from the North-West University and is in her second year of working and has already worked on many high-profile MNC accounts. Kenneth studied at the AAA School of Advertising and thereafter went on to obtain diplomas in copywriting and integrated marketing communications. He too has worked on campaigns for high profile clients.
Sophia’s win is as a result of her design and execution into printing and promotional works for Clover, the HIV Brothers for Life Campaign, the Rock4Aids 2010 campaign and OFM radio station, whilst Kenneth received his award for his execution of campaigns into film (advertisements) for the likes of Canon, McDonald’s and Energizer.
Sponsored by Adams & Adams, the award recognises ‘outstanding achievement’ by talented individuals (between 18 to 27) who work in the brand communications industry, and who are at the beginning of their careers.
“Adams & Adams congratulates Sophia and Kenneth on their awards,” says Mariette du Plessis, Partner at Adams & Adams. “Their work exemplifies the magnitude of South Africa’s young and up-and-coming talent. The creative execution and intellect involved in the body of work submitted by both Sophia and Kenneth this year, shows an insight into their various target audiences which is unmatched by anything I have seen produced by their youthful counterparts in the global advertising world".

Creativity is overflowing and it is all flowing down to Cape Town where Creative Week has begun. It will be a mesmerising week of creative talent abounding in the build up to The Loeries Fez Weekend (16 - 18 September). Artists in Cape Town from all disciplines will be having open days, exhibitions and shows. As the artists get ready for the busy week, one wonders how much thought has gone into protecting their rights. Do they know about the Performers’ Protection Act giving them certain rights, such as preventing the public from making a recording of a live performance? What about furniture and lighting designers launching new products? Have they registered their designs? Where a product is designed with a new shape or appearance, it may qualify for design protection. Designs can be registered for a wide variety of products, ranging from more hard core items like cars to traditionally aesthetic items like jewellery. And what about their brands? If you are using a new brand, it can be protected, if it is distinctive. Know your rights.

The Loerie Awards or, as it is fondly known, “The Loeries” are the most prestigious brand communication awards on the African continent. It is coveted by everyone involved in the broad field of brand communication ranging from television, radio and print communication, design, architecture, interior design, package and publication design to motion graphic design, direct marketing, PR communication, non-broadcast video, live events, sponsorship and digital media.
The Loerie Awards competition was first held in 1978, as a way to support and grow television advertising. It has expanded enormously and the awards are now regionally focused on the continent of Africa and the Middle East.
The Loeries has become far more than a single award ceremony. Since 2005, it has grown to incorporate activities throughout the calendar year, including its own award winning magazine, Migrate and its excellent printed annual. It now offers a travelling expedition, which showcases the year’s winning work and travels throughout South Africa. Several educational institutions, corporate headquarters and many of the art festivals, as well as a few international destinations are visited.
