What do we do?

The centre was started eight years ago to train previously disadvantaged individuals as secretaries. Although the structure of the course has changed since its inception, the aim is still to provide the best possible training to enable these candidates to be immediately employable at the end of the year, in any secretarial position.

Eight candidates are selected annually, after passing a thorough computer, keyboarding and linguistic skills test.

How do we do it?

The course is structured as follows: Phase I runs for five months between March and July. Continuous evaluation is done, with a mid-phase exam during May and a stringent final exam in July. Practical training takes place in any of the following departments: Postal, faxing, reception, switchboard, library, archives, photo copying and all the filing departments.

Only those trainees who have excelled during this phase will be able to continue with Phase II. This phase runs from August to November and is more advanced and prepares the trainees for the work environment, concentrating on typing speed, advanced audio typing, spreadsheets and presentations, as well as other essential secretarial skills, such as proficient note-taking, writing letters and memos, taking initiative and responsibility, and preparing all kinds of relevant correspondence.

A trophy is awarded to the best all-round student for the entire course. The person who receives this trophy, should not only have performed well academically, but should be someone who has excelled in all areas of the training and who, by portraying a positive attitude, enhanced the image of Adams & Adams.
