From 10 December 2009, companies and private persons based in the European Union will be able to register .eu Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs). IDNs are domain names that contain non-ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) characters. Computers only recognize numbers, so the ASCII code was developed as a sequential formula for representing characters as numbers. This is the most common code for text on computers. In common usage, ASCII means a text file that doesn’t include any formatting (plain text).
